Finding a crowd-pleasing side dish can be a challenge, especially during the holidays. I love recipes that don’t hog oven space yet remain simple, festive, and loved by both adults and kids. While the traditional Waldorf Salad boasts sweetness and crunch from various fruits, nuts, and celery, my healthier version features a lighter dressing that beautifully coats each ingredient, ensuring it’s a hit with all of your guests!

Waldorf Salad FAQs

  1. Can I make Waldorf salad ahead of time? Absolutely! I would keep the salad base and the dressing separate, and mix them together just before serving to maintain the salad’s freshness and crunch. Also, I recommend chopping the apples just before serving or coating with a bit of lemon (or orange) juice to keep them from browning.
  2. How long can I store Waldorf salad in the refrigerator? It’s best to eat Waldorf salad within 2-3 days of preparation, ensuring the ingredients retain their texture and flavor.
  3. Can I add protein to my Waldorf salad? For sure! You can enhance the nutritional value of your Waldorf salad by adding grilled chicken, turkey, or even tofu, creating a more filling main dish.

  3. OOPS, except we leave out the walnuts when we’re packing in lunchbox because of the no nut policy at my children’s school.

  4. We like to wrap this up in a tortilla with romaine lettuce for anyone who needs an idea of how to use up leftovers. It’s delicious and it gives the kids something else to pack in their lunchbox that’s has no nuts. Cheers!

  5. After a week of so much heavy holiday food, this was a great break for dinner last night! I used Nayonaise instead of traditional mayo, and I made a little extra dressing and added about 1 1/2 cups of cooked cubed chicken breast–it made for a great one dish meal with a little bread on the side!

  6. I jsut made this for tomorrow. Left out the celery cause neither my husband nor I are big fans.

  7. I was very successful with the asparagus sticks I stumbled upon a couple of days ago. Now I will not surely miss making this one great salad! Awesome recipe!

  8. I love Waldorf Salad! I have a recipe that calls for adding peanut butter (extra yummy), but this is a great low calorie option. What do you recommend for vegan family and friends? Just the fruit salad I guess?
