When Kenya was a baby, I always wanted to make him dessert. It somehow felt unfair to me that as my husband and I devoured sweet treats, he couldn’t be a part of our fun. I devised this sweet potato pudding in an effort to remedy that. The creamy and light texture of this dish is so smooth, its perfect for babies with or without teeth.
I love cooking with sweet potatoes because they’re in season right now, packed with antioxidant vitamin and phytonutrients, and almost every baby I’ve ever known loves them. When I first took a bite, I couldn’t believe how much it tasted just like the filling of sweet potato pie. You may want to double this recipe because it goes perfect for a baby’s dinner or dessert!
Sweet Potato Pudding (Makes 3 Baby Servings or 2 Toddler Serving)
1 Sweet Potato
1 Egg Yolk
1/4 Tsp Cinnamon
1/4 Tsp Rice or Almond Milk
Hot Water
1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
2. Bake sweet potato for 1 hour or until fork tender.
3. When potato is cool, remove the flesh and cool (I like to eat the high fiber potato skin as a snack).
4. Whisk the egg with the cinnamon, rice milk and cooled potato until smooth.
5. Pour into a ramekin (or other small baking dish).
6. Place the ramekin in a larger baking pan.
7. Place the ramekin and baking pan in the oven and pour hot water into the baking pan until it reaches halfway up the ramekin (otherwise known as a water bath).
8. Bake for 30 minutes.
9. Cool and serve.

I’m sure I’m not the only person greatly saddened by the passing of Paul Newman several weeks ago. Not only was he one of the greatest actors ever to grace the screen and stage, but he was also an incredible philantrospsit. Newman’s Own is a brand that you count on to make quality food products which also send a positive message and do a lot of good in this world. The Newmans started their company with a $6000 investment which 26 years later turned into a $250 million company. The proceeds of the sales of their products go to thousands of charities and camps such as the Hole in the Wall Camps.
When Kenya was just starting to get teeth and I wanted him to have simple, healthy snacks to munch on, I found these unsalted pretzels. They’re still one of his favorite snacks and mine too.
We miss you, Paul.

Let’s be honest, giving nutritionally balanced snacks that are satisfying and filling can be tough. With so many high sugar and salt filled foods on the market, it’s hard to navigate what’s actually good and what’s crap. Trust me, just because it says “all natural,” “organic” or has bunny rabbits and Elmo all over it doesn’t mean that it’s going to be good for your little one.
That’s one of the reasons I love Lara Bars. If I had my way, everyone would make their own protein bars, but sometimes that’s not possible. There are tons of bar companies on the market, but most of them are full of sugar and words that I can’t even pronounce.
Lara bars come in delicious flavors like lemon, apple and cherry pie and my favorite, banana bread. The base ingredients are nuts and dates and most of them only have 3-4 ingredients. You can now buy them at almost every grocery and health food store. When you’re rushing in the morning or want to keep something healthy for you or your child in your bag, this is a perfect treat.

I have been on a huge almond butter kick ever since I tried Barney Butter, which I think is the best of all the brands that I’ve tried. Still, my husband has always loved almond butter and he thinks he knows what tastes best, so just to make sure, I did a blind taste test with seven people of different ages (Kenya included!) to see what they thought. It was so much fun! I hid the three different nut butters we were testing (raw almond butter from Trader Joes and Mara Natha no-stir almond butter were the other brands) and let each person try a spoon full of each brand and let them decide which they liked the best. Incredibly, it was unanimous, Barney Butter won each time — even with my husband!
Besides the fact that this almond butter is smooth (not the kind where the oil and nut butter separate and you have to stir for ages to get it to a normal consistency). Even better, it’s produced by a California mother of four, has less saturated fat then peanut butter and its high in magnesium and vitamin E which amongst other things helps to protect skin, circulation, brain and hormones against pollution.
These pops are a perfect energy treat for your little one because they have a fruit and protein. Try pulling them out at a kids summer party and I guarantee you’ll hear oohs and ahhhs from the crowd.
Banana, Almond Butter Pops (Makes 8 Pops, depending on the size of your molds)
3 Bananas
1/4 Cup Almond Butter
1/3 Cup Rice or Almond Milk (Plain or Vanilla)
1. Place the ingredients in a blender and puree until smooth.
2. Pour several tablespoons of mixture into popsicle molds (follow manufacturer’s directions for your mold).
3. Freeze overnight (or a minimum of 4-5 hours).
4. Serve.
