I have a bit of a cookbook addiction. I’ve filled three entire bookcases with my cookbooks and at any given time you can find at least 4 massive stacks of them — each one as tall as my kids — piled high in various rooms around my house. I’ve been collecting cookbooks since I was in my teens. It’s an obsession; I can’t stop myself. Some people get excited about meeting celebrities, for me the thrill has always been about cookbook authors and chefs.

When my hubby and I first met he started buying me one or two new books each year for Christmas. He would make it his mission to get me the best books and As the years passed he would buy more and more. Last year he got me something like 15 cookbooks! I need an intervention!

One of my New Year’s resolutions is to pare down my collection and donate the cookbooks that don’t resonate with me anymore. I’ve been in the process of doing it for several weeks now, but I keep finding myself getting lost in the joys of one or two cookbooks I haven’t looked at in a while and before I know it an hour has passed and I’ve gotten absolutely nothing done. This weeding process could take me years. Books become your friends, filled with all sorts of memories, and it’s hard to think of giving a friend away. The best part of this cookbook exercise for me has been revisiting some of my tried and true favorites as well as discovering newer ones that I adore and will carry on with me for years to come — if I can make some space.

Here’s a last minute holiday list with links to some of my favorite cookbooks, new and old. Click on them today, so they’ll arrive in time for the holidays!

Comments

  1. I found a used copy of Mad Hungry and am enjoying it so much! I’ve made several things that have turned out wonderfully, and am now recommending the book to everyone I know that likes to cook. Thanks for your recommendations!

  2. I have a cookbook addiction as well. But I limit myself to buying a few cookbooks a year. What I do is to look up our library’s newly added cookbooks every few months, and then put a request to borrow them. This means that I always have several new cookbooks on hand to peruse, and if really, really want it, then I buy it. Of course, there are also some cookbooks that our library does not have (like Weelicious Lunches 🙂 ) that I want to get that i would buy….

  3. I am right there with you sistah on the cookbook addiction. I just picked up Kim Macy’s new book Sweet and Savory. Heavenly!
Since I love fish, Roy’s Pacific Rim is a favorite.
Weelicious Lunches changed my kids’ school meals and now I actually LIKE making their lunches every day. I found quite a few recipes in the 4 Hour Chef that the whole family likes.
Now, I’m going back to your list and spend the next couple of hours dreaming…ahhhhhh.

  4. I found two I need to get: Sweet (because, well – the name speaks for itself) and Mad Hungry – because I am in a house of boys! 🙂 Thank you for sharing!

  5. Lovely selection! A third are already on our wishlist, but none made it yet to our shopping basket! Heard that feast is particularly amazing, any comments?

  6. Great line up here, Catherine. Some I own, others I’m coveting. I’ve yet to get my hands on Whole Grain Mornings, but I’m excited to check that one out.
