I have a bit of a cookbook addiction. I’ve filled three entire bookcases with my cookbooks and at any given time you can find at least 4 massive stacks of them — each one as tall as my kids — piled high in various rooms around my house. I’ve been collecting cookbooks since I was in my teens. It’s an obsession; I can’t stop myself. Some people get excited about meeting celebrities, for me the thrill has always been about cookbook authors and chefs.
When my hubby and I first met he started buying me one or two new books each year for Christmas. He would make it his mission to get me the best books and As the years passed he would buy more and more. Last year he got me something like 15 cookbooks! I need an intervention!
One of my New Year’s resolutions is to pare down my collection and donate the cookbooks that don’t resonate with me anymore. I’ve been in the process of doing it for several weeks now, but I keep finding myself getting lost in the joys of one or two cookbooks I haven’t looked at in a while and before I know it an hour has passed and I’ve gotten absolutely nothing done. This weeding process could take me years. Books become your friends, filled with all sorts of memories, and it’s hard to think of giving a friend away. The best part of this cookbook exercise for me has been revisiting some of my tried and true favorites as well as discovering newer ones that I adore and will carry on with me for years to come — if I can make some space.
