I was only supposed to have boys. Specifically, three of them. I have no idea why I believed this, but from the moment I decided I wanted kids, even though I dreamed of having a girl, it is how I was convinced life would play out.

Cut to me 15 weeks pregnant with my second child. Hubby, Kenya and I were on vacation, winding through narrow dirt roads in a jeep, me becoming even more nauseous then I already was from the pregnancy, when my doctor’s office called with my amnio results. We pulled the car over. “Would you like to know the sex of your baby,” the nurse on the other end of the line asked me. My heart was pounding in my chest as I replied I would. After what felt like a 10 minute pause, I heard the words, “it’s a girl.” What?! A girl? I burst into tears of joy. I actually was going to get to do all those girly things I never thought were in the cards for me!

This all leads me in a very round about way to today’s recipe. Six weeks ago I asked Chloe what she wanted to do for her 3rd birthday. She said she wanted to have a Hello Kitty tea party. The idea seemed simple enough at first, but what does one serve at a Hello Kitty tea party? After much deliberation, Chloe and I came up with a menu_ Red Beet and White Bean Hummus (which Chloe and I dubbed Hello Kitty’s Favorite Pink Hummus), Rice Cooker Mac and Cheese, PB&J Panini’s, Grilled Cheese Waffle Sammies, grilled chicken salad, edamame, Blackberry Agua Fresca, fruit water, Chocolate Graham Crackers, a great big Tres Leche Cake, and the hit of the party, these magic fruit wands. From the moment I put them out, the kids’ eyes, hands and mouths were locked on them.

Whether you have girls or boys, these fruit wands will be sure to cast a spell no matter what the occasion. There’s no better way to make fruit disappear!

Author: Catherine McCord
Prep Time 10 minutes
Total Time 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 4 starfruit
  • 1 small watermelon
  • 1 bunch red grapes
  • 1 bunch green grapes
  • 1 cantaloupe
  • 1 pineapple, peeled
  • 40 small to medium strawberries
  • 40 bamboo skewers

Instructions

  • Cut the cantaloupe in half and remove the seeds.
  • Using a melon baller, make 40 balls out of the cantaloupe. OR, slice the cantaloupe into 1/2-inch slices and cut out shapes using a small cookie cutter.
  • Cut the watermelon in half and, using a melon baller, make 40 balls.
  • Cut pineapple into 1/2-inch slices, then cut the slices into 1/2-inch cubes.
  • Cut each starfruit into 10 1/4-inch slices.
  • Assemble the fruit wands by gently sliding each piece of fruit onto each skewer in this order: 1 Slice of Starfruit (this becomes the star on top), 1 Ball of Watermelon, 1 Red Grape, 1 Green Grape, 1 Piece of Cantaloupe, 1 Cube of Pineapple, 1 Strawberry.
  • Serve.
  • * Fruit wands can be assembled up to one day in advance. Lay out finished wands on a baking sheet, making sure to keep space between each wand. Layer parchment paper or plastic wrap between each layer of wands. Keep in the refrigerator overnight.
  • ** No need for waste! Remaining fruit from the cantaloupe, watermelon, grapes or pineapple can be used to make a beautiful fruit salad!
