I love food. So much so that in my years I’ve eaten live worms, fish eyes and a few other outrageous foods that most people would gag at the thought of. Ironically, there’s one not-so-outrageous food that I absolutely get queasy at the thought of_ lamb. I think it’s the only food in the world that I won’t eat. I don’t remember eating lamb as a kid — maybe that has something to do with it — but regardless, even when I visited Chile, a country renown for this succulent meat, I couldn’t ingest a single bite, so believe me, I’ve tried.

But just because I don’t enjoy a certain food doesn’t mean that I don’t want my kids to have a chance to decide for themselves what they like, so recently I got over my fear of lamb and seared them up some simple baby lamb chops. My kids must not have inherited my distaste for lamb because my two little carnivores proceeded to voraciously dip the chops in the yogurt mint sauce and pick the bones clean of any trace of meat. They were in heaven to say the least. I could swear the look on both of their faces meant, “why have you never given us this before?!”

I always try to remind myself that just because I have certain likes and dislikes, it doesn’t mean my kids will share them. Who’s knows, maybe your kids will end up loving live worms or fish eyes. Don’t worry, I won’t be posting recipes on weelicious for Snail Smoothies or Firefly Frittatas anytime soon, but don’t knock it if you haven’t tried it. 😉

  1. My two toddlers love lamb, so does everyone else in our family. My 18month old is fussy with her read meat she likes to be able to “hold it” with her hands which is why lamb chops are a fantastic solution for her,my 4 year old on the other hand will just devour any red meat placed in front of her apart from mince she can’t stand mince for some reason.
My girls can be quite picky when they want to be, for example when it comes to white meat like chicken my 18mont old is not a real fan of roast or baked chicken but loves nuggets so once a week I will let her eat some chicken nuggets instead of roast chicken as long as she eats her vegetables. I love all foods except for pork I can’t digest it properly, but apart from that my husband and I are all round food lovers and try to encourage our children to be the same, kids will be kids and you just have to give positive reinforcement it goes a long way instead of getting angry or frustrated at them, and it is not a crime to substitute some foods sometimes for example if your toddler doesn’t want to eat mashed potato but loves MacDonald fries then make some homemade fries they are inexpensive and healthy if you don’t use oil or fats and the kids are getting the same nutrition as they would from the mash its just in a different form, as long as they are eating from all different food groups then the form it comes in shouldn’t be a real issue.

  2. Cathrine, Curious what you at for dinner while your little carnivores were devouring the lamb 🙂 I can’t wait to try this…

  3. LOL! I have had a dislike for Bananas since I was 4. I can taste it in bread if it’s been sitting beside bananas but my daughter LOVES bananas! It’s been quite the adventure for me having to buy, cut them and mash them and even touch them to give to her. I’m not holding my breath as much anymore but I’m still not venturing as far as eating them…yet.

  4. I, too, do not care for the distinct strong meaty taste of lamb at all. However, my husband is Iranian and when we go to family functions, nevertheless, lamb is always on the table! My 14 month old daughter can’t get enough when she eats it at my inlaws! You’d have thought I starved her before we arrived LOL!

  5. I must admit when I saw the title of this recipe I was tempted to immediately delete and that is something I never do with your e-mails. I, like you, have never developed a taste for lamb. I do appreciate the fact that children may have different taste buds than their mommies. I don’t like broccoli either, that is fixed plain, but my little one surprised me by devouring it the other day.

  6. My EXTREMELY picky preschoolers LOVE lamb chops. It’s a food I grew up on and my mother actually made it for my boys for the first time when they were 2. I saw how simple it was and make it once a week now. I usually just salt them and broil for a few minutes on each side. My boys now pretend to be cavemen when they chew on the chops. Although they don’t use table manners on lamb chop nights, they are eating and that makes me happy!

  7. This post reminded me of something my friend encourages her kids to say and I like it so much I think it is worth sharing: Instead of saying that you do or do not like something (or worse, hate) she encourages her little ones to say they don’t prefer it. It sounds much more pleasant coming out of those cute little mouths.

BTW, we love lamb and will definitely be trying this out. Thanks for stretching beyond your comfort zone 🙂

  8. I love lamb. But most importantly, I really admire your mentality and your willingness to make something you yourself wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole for your kids. I think too many parents project their dislikes on their children making them incredibly picky eaters that only eat chicken nuggets and mac and cheese. Picky eaters that only eat about 2 things are annoying.

  9. This is so simple – I have always been afraid of making lamb chops because I thought it was difficult. I always stuck with ground lamb for greek burgers or mini meatballs or made gyros. My son is anti meat at the moment but my husband will love you for this one!

  10. So funny. Lamb Chops are our favorite, favorite thing to eat. I make it for every special occassion, and anytime we see them on a restaurant menu, there is nothing else we will ever consider ordering! Just last night, we had company over for dinner, so I made my lamb chops recipe, and served the weelicious coconut rice (added dried cranberries and almond slivers to “adult” it up a little, and made the weelicious ratatouille. Our guests loved the fabulous dinner! Thanks Catherine for all your lovely dishes. My 2 year old is enjoying a delicious lunch of whole wheat pasta topped with a heaping spoon of ratatouille, and devouring it, as I type!
