As Kenya and Chloe get older the one part of the day that I give the most importance to than any other is mealtime. Even at age 6 and 8 I see how busy their lives have become between school, after school activities, time with friends and more. Whether it’s breakfast, dinner or lunch on the weekends, I really try to make meals that we can sit down to and catch up about our days. I see how those precious minutes can be deepening our relationships and truly connecting as one.

When I heard about the Billion Family Dinners Challenge, the social advocacy movement bringing families back together at the dinner table, I got really excited. Their goal is to bring people together by challenging families across the nation to achieve one billion shared meals by encouraging each other to log their experiences on social media on their DinnerCall app. I try to share several meals on Instagram and Twitter each week hoping others will share their family meals as well. Seeing and inspiring other families share their communal food experiences with each other is the first step in watching kids make major changes in their lives.

Studies show that when kids eat with their families their school performance, increased literacy, family wellness and overall health go up and substance abuse, bullying, family divorce and obesity go down. Think about the power of that kind of change just by eating as a family and rallying to do it globally!
