This week I’m launching a new video series I couldn’t be more excited about with the Design Network called Modern Home Ec. Each week will be a new short video where you get to learn everything from how to changing air filters, filling all the holes in the walls from where I’ve been hanging pictures to getting the toughest stains out of counter tops.
I’ve always loved being in school and learning. Whether it was grade school, high school, culinary school or taking writing or pottery classes I’ve always felt like a sponge for picking up hobbies or new found talents that I’ve been able to spin into my work and home life. One talent I never figured out, though, was the fine art of Home Ec and learning the simplest tasks to fixing things around my house. How come no one ever taught me these little quick fixes? Let me tell you, it’s not just a man’s job!
You would think that even changing a lightbulb would be easy, but head to the hardware store and looking at the shelves filled with different styles and types of bulbs through me into a panic. For years I’ve been wanting someone to teach me how to learn how to take care of small DIY projects around our house without having to pay someone else to do them for me.
This weeks video features my handy fix it guru, Jeff Enden, teaching me how to fix a drippy or leaky toilet. This would have cost me over $100 if I called a plumber, but we did it together for just over $10. Talk about savings and I learned how to do it for years to come!
Let me know what you think and if you want me to make a video with a quick Modern Home Ec solution let me know in the comments below!
Sounds great! In this day in age, we (women) expect men to do all the DIY house stuff. This is very inspirational & motivating to every woman wanting & needing to know all about “fixing” things at home! I have been wanting to put together a picture collage! Just don’t know where to start! Sizing, distance apart, etc. anything would be helpful!! Great idea!!
Cracks in grout and how to do a gallery wall
I love this idea!
-Replacing an old ceiling fan,
-replacing a thermostat (those new ones can save you tons of $$ on your electric bill),
-replacing a toilet seat,
-replacing door knobs and dead bolts when you but a new house (for security reasons)
Fantastic idea , I even wanted to do a plumbing , painting decorating course , but they are too expensive and about 3 years long . I’m looking forward to these videos to learn DIY jobs around my home . Great ideas , well done !
How to properly hang a picture on the wall. Also how to properly hang several pictures that should be the same height and space apart. Thanks!
Oh and a few more… I love this idea!!! How to restain my deck, repair/replace an aging wooden fence, how to fix a broken hinge on a folding cabinet door if the screw hole has been ripped out, and how to remove oil stains from the garage/ driveway
How to fix the cracking grout in my shower and on a similar note, how to remove the cracked cement between my outside patio flagstones so I can redo it with something weed resistant.
I would love a solution (video) teaching me how to diy changing out a kitchen faucet set and garbage disposal. I’m “told” it’s easy. Would love to do myself and put the extra dollars into a nicer faucet and disposal. Thanks!
This sounds like a great idea. My husband is a pretty good handyman but also an aging, disabled vet w/balance probs. I am especially interested in DIY interior painting.
These sound great! Super excited to learn some of these things!!
I would love to see more modern home Ec videos,my husband is not a handyman and I would like to learn to do it myself to get things done like patch up the hole in my son’s bathroom.
