My family and I LOVE pesto. It is so easy and such a great way to take a simple pasta to the next level. In this allergy friendly pesto recipe, instead of pine nuts, I used hemp seeds. Not only are hemp seeds a great source of protein and omega 3 fatty acids (I love putting them in smoothies, pancakes and protein balls), they also make this recipe safe for people with nut allergies! Plus, adding parmesan cheese is totally optional, so this pesto recipe is can also be vegan and dairy free! Nut free, dairy free, vegan hemp seed pesto? What's not to love and perfect for any kids who have sensitive food allergies.

Hemp Seed Pesto is extremely versatile and great for whipping up a last minute pasta dinner or as a topping on a yummy grain bowl or salad. It's even delicious on top of your eggs in the morning. Toss it on some penne pasta with tomatoes and a sprinkle of parmesan cheese and get ready to impress everyone while putting in minimal effort.

Homemade pesto freezes really well which is the best! This way you get to have it on hand any time of year, whether fresh basil is in season or not. Just pop a few tablespoons into freeze or ice cube trays, so you have them at the ready!

Hemp Seed Pesto (3/4 cup)

Ingredients

  • 3 cups fresh basil leaves
  • 1/2 cup hemp seeds
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • juice of one lemon
  • 1/4 cup parmesan or vegan cheese, if desired

Preparation

1. Place all of the ingredients in a food processor and puree until desired texture. 
2. Serve tossed with pasta or over avocado toast.
