Why I Love This Recipe

The 4th of July is all about stars, stripes, and patriotic colors, and this toast delivers all three in the most delicious way! For the past few years, the kids start their July 4th with this easy red, white and blue snack. These patriotic toasts are so much fun to make and totally delicious! Whether you’re hosting a big celebration (check out my 43 Festive 4th of July Recipes for a Crowd for inspo!) or just enjoying the holiday at home, this easy recipe brings a cheerful pop of color to your table. Even better, it’s kid-friendly and easy enough for little hands to help assemble!

The Ingredients

  • Sandwich bread: Your favorite type works! You can toast it or not toast it, trim off the edges or don’t. You decide!
  • Spread for the “White” Base: We typically go for whipped cream cheese, but yogurt, ricotta cheese or even cottage cheese would work great. The white base really helps the red preserves stand out!
  • Fresh blueberries: These are the “stars” on your flag toast.
  • Strawberry preserves: Can’t have an American flag without the red stripes!
  • Banana: Whether you slice your banana into strips or half moons, they’ll look perfect on this patriotic breakfast toast.

How to Make Patriotic American Flag Toast

Step 1: Start with your base. Toast the bread (or don’t, your choice!) and spread on a generous layer of your chosen white base like whipped cream cheese or yogurt.

Step 2: Add the stripes. Spread preserves on the toast avoiding the upper left hand corner (that’s where the “stars” go!).

Step 3: Prep the Banana. Cut the banana in half and then into thin strips OR cut into circles and then half moons. Place the bananas stripes or half moons across the toast to resemble stripes.

Step 4: Add the Stars. Place blueberries in the upper left hand corner to resemble the stars on the American flag.

Recipe Note

There are two ways to make the red and white stripes:
1. Spread red preserves across the toast (avoiding the blueberry corner), then layer banana slices in between for white stripes.
2. Alternately, skip the preserves and bananas and use sliced strawberries directly on the white base to to create the red and white stripes.

Tips and Tricks

  • Prevent browning: Toss banana slices in a little lemon juice to keep them from browning if you’re prepping ahead.
  • Toast tip: If you toast the bread, let it cool completely before adding the cream cheese or other white base to avoid sogginess.
  • Leftover Banana slices? If you end up with a few extra pieces of bananas, you can always freeze bananas for healthy smoothies. Learn how to freeze bananas (and ways to use them) here.

FAQs

Can I prep American Flag Toast ahead of time?

I wouldn’t recommend assembling these in advance. You could possibly go ahead and slice the bananas (and toss with lemon juice to prevent browning), but for the freshest look and texture, it’s best to assemble the toast just before serving.

Can I use other preserves besides strawberry?

Yes! Any red spread will work. I’ve used raspberry preserves for this recipe and it was delicious and still beautiful!
