Why I Love This Recipe
If you’re planning your Independence Day menu for a crowd, these 4th of July Fruit Wands are always a hit at my house! The kids were so excited about the juicy watermelon stars and sweet blueberries that they completely ignored dinner and played pretend wizard games at the table instead. It’s a simple, healthy treat that turns into an instant holiday activity. They’re fun to eat and even more fun to make! With their vibrant colors and hands-on prep (try my Red, White and Blue Parfaits too!), these patriotic fruit skewers are a festive way to get kids excited about eating fruit on the 4th of July.
Ingredients and Supplies
Another fantastic thing about these patriotic fruit kabobs is that you only need two ingredients and a couple other supplies to make something delicious and create tons of fun! Here’s all you need:
- Watermelon: I opt for a seedless watermelon so that I don’t have to worry about digging out seeds (and potentially messing up my star shapes!).
- Blueberries: Bigger blueberries are easier to skewer!
- Wooden Skewers: You could also use metal skewers if that’s what you have.
- 3″ Star-Shaped Cookie Cutter: Any shape will do, but I love the star for 4th of July!
Got extra watermelon? Don’t let it go to waste! Try making my easy Watermelon Slushie for a chilly, delicious treat!
Variations and Substitutions
- Fruit swaps: Use strawberries, raspberries, bananas, or apples to keep the red, white, and blue theme. To keep bananas or apples from browning, squeeze a bit of lemon juice on them!
- Add sweetness: Add mini marshmallows between the fruit for a red, white, and blue twist, or drizzle a bit of melted chocolate for a fun treat.
- Different shapes: No star cutter? No worried! Try hearts, circles, or simple cubes.
- Savory option: Add cheese cubes like mozzarella or cheddar for a tasty, protein-packed snack.
How to Make Patriotic 4th of July Fruit Wands

Step 1: Slice the watermelon into 1/2 to 1 inch round slices.

Step 2: Cut out star shapes using a three-inch star-shaped cookie cutter.

Step 3: Gently slide the blueberries on wooden skewers and finally place a watermelon star on the top. Or place a few blueberries then a watermelon star and repeat until the skewer is filled.

Step 4: Serve the skewers or place them in a tall glass or in decorated floral foam as an edible centerpiece.

Tips and Tricks
- Assemble with Care. When assembling the skewers, be gentle while threading the fruits onto the skewers to avoid crushing the blueberries or damaging the delicate watermelon shapes.
- Use seedless watermelon. This helps you not have to dig out seeds and risk messing up the star shapes you cut out.
- Toddler-safe option: Skip the skewers for little ones. Serve the fruit in cups instead. It’ll still be patriotic and fun!
Prep Ahead & Storage Tips
- Prep ahead: Cut the watermelon stars and wash blueberries a few hours before your party. Store cut fruit in airtight containers in the fridge to maintain juiciness and firmness until ready to assemble.
- Assemble last minute: Thread fruit onto skewers right before serving to prevent sogginess and crushing.
- Store leftovers: Remove fruit from skewers and refrigerate in a sealed container. The leftover fruit is best eaten within 1-2 days.

FAQs
Use firmer watermelon and cut thicker slices (about 1 inch). Chilling the watermelon before cutting can also help keep the shapes firm.
No worries! You can cut the watermelon into cubes, circles with a melon baller, or other shapes like hearts. The colorful fruit is what makes these wands fun!
For toddlers, it’s safer to skip the skewers and serve the fruit pieces in cups or bowls to avoid any choking hazards.
