The Ingredients
For the Watermelon Fries:
- Seedless watermelon: Perfect for slicing into “fries” without worrying about pesky seeds.
- Tajín (optional): This popular chili-lime seasoning adds a zesty, spicy kick that pairs beautifully with sweet fruit.
For the Honey Lime Yogurt Dip:
- Greek yogurt: The base for our dip. It adds tang and creaminess.
- Lime: Fresh lime juice is the way to go.
- Honey: Adds a touch of natural sweetness to the dip.
How to Pick the Best Watermelon
Is there anything better than a sweet, juicy watermelon in the summer? I’m not convinced! One of my favorite parts of visiting the farmers market each week is grabbing a giant watermelon for the family. Here’s how to pick a good one:
- Look for a yellow field spot: A deep yellow spot means it ripened on the vine.
- Tap it: A hollow sound means it’s juicy inside.
- Check the weight: The heavier it feels, the more water (and sweetness) it holds.
- Skip shiny skin: A dull rind usually means it’s ripe.
If turning them into fries isn’t your jam, scoop it with a melon baller, or slice it into sticks!
How to Make Watermelon Fries with Honey Lime Yogurt Dip

Step 1: Cut the watermelon in half then into 1 inch half moons.

Step 2: Carefully remove the rind with a small knife.

Step 3: Cut watermelon into 3 inch long “fries”.

Step 4: Sprinkle with tajin if desired.

Step 5: Mix yogurt dip ingredients in a small bowl until combined.

Step 6: Serve watermelon fries with dipping sauce and enjoy!
Tips and Tricks
- Pick a good watermelon: Look for one that feels heavy for its size, has a creamy yellow field spot (where it rested on the ground), and gives a deep hollow sound when tapped!
- Try a yellow watermelon: It’s not as common as red, but if you spot one, grab it! It’s a bit sweeter with hints of honey, and it looks gorgeous served alongside classic red slices.
- Make ahead: The yogurt dip can be made 1–2 days in advance and stored in the fridge.
- Storage: Cut watermelon can be stored in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
- Wait on the Tajín: Don’t sprinkle until serving, otherwise it can draw out water from the melon.

FAQs
Whole watermelons can be stored at room temperature, but once cut, they should be refrigerated in an airtight container and eaten within 3–5 days.
Look for a creamy yellow field spot, a deep hollow sound when tapped, and a dull (not shiny) rind. A ripe watermelon also feels heavy for its size.
You can! Frozen watermelon is great for a hydrating smoothie or blended into watermelon slushies. Just cut into cubes, remove seeds if needed, and freeze in a single layer before transferring to a bag.
Yellow watermelon is very similar to red watermelons, but they’re slightly sweeter and have subtle hints of honey. The texture is the same!
