If there’s one piece of equipment that gets a lot of use in our kitchen it would be our Vitamix. I make a Pregnancy Smoothie every day, my husband makes a Crazy Healthy Smoothie each morning and Chloe an Avocado Shake at least twice a week. At first when Gemma was born we would try to hold her when we turned it on as we were worried the noise may scare her, but she’s gotten so used to it being on throughout the day, she barely flinches when we turn it on.

Throughout January we’ve been making even more smoothies, juice and soups in our blender as it’s one of the easiest ways to get tons of nutrition with foods that are also easy to digest and just make you feel good all over. Especially while I’m nursing I’m trying to drink as much liquid as possible to produce as much milk as possible. This week I wanted to make something sweet in the middle of the day so I whipped up this Chocolate Almond Butter Smoothie. I was craving chocolate, but didn’t want anything too heavy so I took a few handfuls of frozen banana chunks that we always keep in a huge zipper bag in the freezer, almond butter, pure unsweetened cocoa powder, hemp seeds and unsweetened vanilla almond milk to make what turned out to be the closest healthy creation to a frosty milkshake I’ve ever consumed. If you’ve ever had a Frosty from Wendy’s (my childhood fast food craving), this would be it’s good for you cousin. Cold and creamy, but also nutritious.

I popped a few extra glasses in the freezer and right before it was time to pick up the kids we grabbed them to take to school for pick up with wide straws. When the kids saw them their eyes totally lit up! They thought it was the most decadent midday treat I had ever brought them. They were enjoying them so much I didn’t even need to tell them they’re actually good for them!

Chocolate Almond Butter Smoothie (makes about 2 1/2 cups)

gluten free

Ingredients

  • 2 chopped frozen bananas
  • 1 tablespoon Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
  • 2 tablespoons Almond Butter
  • 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • 1 tablespoon hemp hearts

Preparation

Place all the ingredients in a blender and puree until smooth.

    I make a version similar to your recipe in my vitamix. I decided to add spinach and or a carrot (or both!) to it since I have a picky eater. I use chocolate almond milk to mask the color for my son. And with the chocolate there the spinach taste is subtle.
    We heart the vitamix!

    I've got a question for you - I have been following you for several years now, and I know that you are big into avoiding processed foods. I have tried to do the same since my son was born, and I have recently been reading the book \"In Defense of Food\" by Michael Pollan. We have had more discussions around the table about \"real\" food vs processed food or food-like substances, but I am at a loss regarding how to explain these concepts to my 4 year old. Do you have any suggestions? How do you talk to your kids about your food philosophy? In our case, my son has friends and relatives who eat lots of processed foods and fast food, and I have a hard time explaining why we try not to do that without villainizing the food his friends eat.

      I try to keep the conversation based around what is good for our bodies and our planet. I don't say \"the food so and so eats is bad\", instead I'll talk about how the apple we just picked from the tree comes from nature and how it is so much better for our bodies than a bag of chips. If they ask specific questions like, \"why can't we eat at McDonald's?\" I will very quickly and lightly talk about how that food isn't good for our bodies and how we are fortunate to have access to fresh foods that are great for us.

    This was SO good. There is seriosuly never a need for a real milkshake for a smoothie with great flavor like this!! I used dark chocolate cocoa powder.

      The banana adds sweetness and it thickens the smoothie so I wouldn't try to replace it. :)

      The hemp hearts are in there because they add tons of nutrition! You can leave them out if you prefer or substitute with something like flax or chia seeds.
