Summer means taking most of our meals and snacks outside, and beach days are at the top of the list. The trick to a good beach picnic is packing food that travels well, holds up in a cooler, and is easy to eat with sandy hands. These are my go-to recipes for exactly that, from sandwiches and wraps to a couple of sweet treats. Don’t forget plenty of water and sunscreen, and you’re set for the day.

Beach Picnic FAQs

What food is good for a beach picnic?

The best beach picnic foods travel well, hold up without melting or wilting, and are easy to eat with your hands. Think sandwiches and wraps, a sturdy pasta salad, fresh fruit, dips with crackers or veggies, and a sweet treat like cookies or fruit leather. Anything that survives a few hours in a cooler or bag is fair game.

How do you keep food cold at the beach?

Pack a well-insulated cooler with plenty of ice or frozen cold packs, and keep it in the shade. For extra insurance, freeze water bottles overnight and use them to keep everything cold, then drink them as they melt. Keep perishable items like dips and sandwiches at the bottom where it stays coldest.

What beach snacks don’t need refrigeration?

Plenty of great options skip the cooler entirely: fruit leather, baked potato chips, crackers, trail mix, whole fruit, and cookies all hold up at room temperature. These are perfect for tossing in a beach bag when you don’t want to haul a cooler.

A great beach day really comes down to good food that’s easy to pack and easy to eat. Mix and match a few of these depending on who you’re feeding and how long you’ll be out, and you’ll have everyone happy and full between swims.
