Do I have the only kids who would rather eat with their hands than with a fork, knife or spoon? Especially when they’re ravenous they will come to the kitchen table and dig right in grabbing food and inhaling it as fast as possible. There are some foods that seem like they should be eaten with utensils, but they’re honestly a lot more fun to enjoy using fingers like chicken nuggets, pizza balls and especially many breakfast foods.

I’ve gotten to the point that I won’t even put out silverware in the morning when I’m making waffles, french toast or even pancakes as the kids prefer it when I fill little dishes with maple, honey or fresh raspberry syrup for them to dunk right into saving me the trouble of washing anything other than their plates.

I love it when they get extra creative with their food creating new ways to eat what seems like a straightforward food. Kenya hadn’t been feeling great a few weeks ago and was sticking to the BRAT diet – bananas, rice, applesauce and toast. On this occasion, Kenya sat at the table after a day without eating from being sick. He sat staring blankly ahead with little interest in the leftover whole wheat pancakes I had placed in front of him. The next time I turned around he had filled the pancakes with yogurt and fruit calling them “Pancake Tacos”. He looked just like he was at a Mexican restaurant, tilting his head slightly to the side making sure that not a drop of the creamy filling dripped out of his “taco”.

The best part is that he immediately appeared to feel better as he ate with his hands, quickly filling his belly. I watched the joy and pleasure on his face eating a food the way he wanted to and probably ended up enjoying it even more. No utensils needed!

  1. My kids will eat almost anything that involves eating with their hands. I never thought of making breakfast tacos, it’s a great idea. It would be quick for school breakfasts.

  2. Great idea I haven’t thought of! My daughter also prefers to eat with her hands and I get criticized for allowing her to do so. My focus is on her eating, not having the best table manners. This is perfect for her!

  3. This is a great idea! I’m excited to try it with the yogurt GoGo squeezers. Thanks!

  4. GoGo Squeezes are just about the only things that both of my picky eaters agree on. And I feel good about giving them!

  5. My 2 year old always prefers eating with his hands over using utensils! I love this recipe idea! Definitely trying it out this weekend.
