Why I Love This Recipe

  • Cool and Refreshing: These frozen bites are ice-cold straight from the freezer! Perfect for cooling off on a hot day (though we happily eat them year-round!).
  • Kid-Friendly Fun: Dipping the banana bites in chocolate is such a fun activity for kids. They love getting involved, and seeing their proud faces when we pull them from the freezer is the best.
  • Healthier Sweet Treat: I love that these are made with simple ingredients. No weird additives, just real food with real flavor. They’re similar to my Chocolate Banana Bites, but with a layer of protein packed peanut butter in the center!
  • Great for Ripe Bananas: We always have extra bananas ready to make Banana Chocolate Chip Bread, Frozen Bananas on a Stick and of course tons of healthy smoothies, but this is one of my favorite ways to use them up! Bananas, chocolate, and peanut butter? Yes, please.

The Ingredients

You only need four simple ingredients to make this healthy frozen banana snack!

  • Bananas: loaded with potassium and fiber. Ripe ones work best for flavor and softness.
  • Peanut Butter: adds healthy fats and protein to make these bites even more satisfying.
  • Chocolate Chips: dark chocolate chips, milk chocolate or even semi-sweet work perfectly here!
  • Coconut Oil: this helps the chocolate melt smoothly and creates that perfect shell when frozen.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Nut Butter Options: Not a fan of peanut butter or need a nut-free version? Swap in almond butter, cashew butter, sunflower seed butter, or even crunchy peanut butter for extra texture.
  • Vegan-Friendly: To keep this recipe completely vegan, use dairy-free chocolate chips and double-check that your nut butter is free of added dairy or honey.
  • Add Some Crunch: After dipping, sprinkle your bites with crushed nuts, shredded coconut, crushed pretzels, or mini chocolate chips before the chocolate sets. It adds texture and makes them look extra fun and fancy.
  • Mix Up the Chocolate: Try white chocolate or even a drizzle of both dark and white chocolate for a fun twist.

How to Make Frozen Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Bites

Step 1: Place 15 banana slices on a parchment lined baking sheet or plate. Top each banana with ½ teaspoon of peanut butter. Top with another banana slice to make “sandwiches”. Freeze the bananas for 1 hour or more.

Step 2: Melt coconut oil and chocolate chips in a glass bowl in the microwave for 30 seconds – 1 minute. Or add to a small saucepan over low heat for 2-3 minutes or until completely smooth stirring continuously. Allow the chocolate to come to room temperature, about 5 minutes.

Step 3: Using a fork, dip the peanut butter bananas in the chocolate until completely covered allowing the extra chocolate to drip off. Place the chocolate covered bananas back on the parchment and freeze for at least an hour before transferring to zipper bag or container. Store in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Tips and Tricks

  • Work In Batches: If you’re making a big batch, only take a few banana bites out of the freezer at a time when dipping in chocolate. They can start to thaw and get slippery quickly, which makes them harder to handle (and messier!). Keeping the rest frozen until you’re ready helps everything go smoothly.
  • Let the Chocolate Cool Slightly: After melting, let the chocolate sit for a few minutes before dipping. If it’s too warm, it can melt the peanut butter or cause the banana to slide.
  • Parchment Is Your Friend: Don’t skip lining your tray! It keeps everything from sticking and makes clean-up a breeze.

FAQs

How long do frozen chocolate peanut butter banana bites last in the freezer?

They’ll keep well for up to 3 months in an airtight container or freezer bag. Be sure to label them with the date so you remember when you made them!

Do I have to use coconut oil to melt the chocolate?

Coconut oil helps the chocolate melt smoothly and harden into that nice shell once frozen. If you don’t have it, you can skip it, but your chocolate may be a bit thicker and harder to coat evenly.

These were so great! Such an easy recipe & perfect when wanting a sweet but wanting it on the healthier side. Next time I will double the recipe and use more peanut butter. I did a thin layer and more would definitely be better.
